Co-Chair of CWT, Merlene Toh Emerson Awarded MBE at Queen’s Birthday Honours

On 27 October 2016, Co-Chair of CWT, Merlene Toh Emerson was presented with an MBE at Buckingham Palace by HRH Princess Anne for “political and public service”.
Merlene said: “It was an honour to speak to Princess Anne who asked me about why there were so few British Chinese engaged in politics in the UK."
“There are of course many from the Chinese community who do invaluable work which go unrecognised and I would like to accept my award with them in mind as well."
In total 1,149 people have received an award in this year's Queen's birthday honours:
- 70% of the recipients are people who have undertaken outstanding work in their communities either in a voluntary or paid capacity
- there are 538 successful women candidates in the list, representing 47% of the total
- 8.2% of the successful candidates (90 people) come from a BAME (black and asian minority ethnic) background: the greatest ever number of BAME recipients in an honours list
