MeiSimandMeThe Trust is currently headed by Co-Chairs Mei Sim Lai and Merlene Emerson, members of a strong and diverse Board of Trustees. The Trustees bring to the Board the experience, understanding and skills which are vital for realising the Trust's goals. Since 2012, Joe Hung has been employed to work with Soho Housing Trust and other housing associations and Chinese community associations across London and in the UK. The Trust is also supported by partner organisations such as Chinese National Healthy Living Centre, patrons and advisors from business and political spheres who assist with fundraising and in informing policy on health, welfare and ageing societies.

Merlene Toh Emerson MBE

Merlene Toh Emerson MBE

Merlene was a City solicitor and former partner at a Singapore law firm. She is a C.E.D.R. accredited commercial mediator, a Restorative Justice Practitioner and has been a volunteer mediator for CALM Mediation, for the last 12 years. She was on the board of social landlord, Richmond Housing Partnership between 2006-2012 and is currently on the board of Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association and is Chair of Lien Viet Housing Association. Merlene stood as a Parliamentary Candidate for the Liberal Democrats in Hammersmith in 2010 and for the London Assembly in 2008 and 2012. She co-founded Chinese Liberal Democrats in 2006 and now works part time at the House of Lords, serves on the executive of Liberal International Great Britain and campaigns on behalf of the Chinese community and on equalities legislation.

Mei Sim Lai OBE DL OBE DL FCA FCCA

Mei Sim is founder and Principal of LaiPeters & Co and Managing Director of the management and consulting firm LaiPeters Limited. She is deputy Lieutenant of Greater London and Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Brent. Born and educated in Malaysia, Mei Sim came to London in 1970 to train as a Chartered Accountant. In 1979 she became the first Chinese and female Partner at the leading firm of City Chartered Accountants, Pridie Brewster, established in 1914. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountant. Since 1991,Mei Sim holds and has held several Non Executive and Board appointments in the Public, Private, City, International business and Charity and Voluntary sectors.

Cllr. Stephen Shing

Stephen is leader of the Independent Democrat Group and Councillor for Wealden District Council and leader of the Independent Democrat Group for Wealden District Council, East Sussex. Stephen was elected Councillor for Willingdon, Polegate and East Dean in 2001, having been a Parish Councillor for Willingdon and Jevington since 1997 and representative for Willingdon on Wealden District Council since 1999. He owns a Chinese takeaway outlet and as well as being a qualified plumber.

Eddie Chan

Eddie Chan

Eddie Chan is a founding member of London Chinese Community Network and the Chinese Welfare Trust and had been Chair of both organizations for many years. He is also a chartered civil & structural engineer and chartered manager with a MBA degree, has over 20 years’ experience of working in consultancy on infrastructure development worldwide. This day he continues his interest in engineering by his close link with an international engineering consultancy based in Turkey.

Eddie has been the Director of the Chinese National Healthy Living Centre since August 2000. Since joining the Centre, he has transformed this London based organization to a truly national and respected one.

He has been member of various DH’s ministerial advisory groups and has helped the House of Commons to set up its All Party Parliamentary Group for British Chinese back in 2001. He was a steering group member of Westminster LINk from 2009 to 2013 and has now been elected committee member for Westminster Healthwatch. He is currently the Chair of the BME Health Forum in London.

John Lau has a commitment to and comprehensive experience of social housing and regeneration, gained from 30 years experience in housing, social care, and regeneration in the public, voluntary and private sector. John's areas of expertise include; housing management, development, business planning, housing policy, stock transfer, estate regeneration, and community development. John has worked for a number of local authorities, Housing Associations, the Strategic Health Authority and National Charities.

John has been a board member and chair of a number of charities and Housing Associations including CWT where he has been a board member since 2011.

Mr Kam Yee Lee was born in Hong Kong. He migrated to UK in 1982. He qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant in 1990 and set up his professional practice in Central London in 1991. He was invited to join the then newly formed Chinese Conservative Group as its Vice Chairman in 1992. The Chinese Conservative Group was the first political group of its kind established by British Chinese in this country in 1991. In 2002, Mr Lee was invited to take over as Chairman of the group. He had then re-organized and expanded the group to build up a national network with branches in many cities all over the country. When he joined the Chinese Conservative Group, he set out to achieve three missions:

Stephen Perry

Stephen runs his own business as well as being Chairman and Managing Director of the 48 Group Club, which has a long history of promoting positive relations between China and the UK. Additionally he is vice-chairman of the China–Britain Business Council, an organisation that helps UK companies grow and develop their business in China. Stephen has spent his whole working life working with China and during that time he has developed many friends in the British Chinese community. This has led to an understanding of the unique nature of the Chinese in the UK, and the challenges they face. His involvement brings contacts with China, including Hong Kong, and the British business community. Stephen is a fellow of University College London, where he studied law.

David Chao He Wei

David Chao He Wei

David Wei is a well-known and respected figure in the UK Chinese community and in China as an expert in Real Estate investment. He came to the UK over 20 years ago to study and completed his law degree and finance degree and an MBA in International Business. David then spent his early career at The Shanghai Foreign Investment and Development Board, followed by the Chinese Civil Service.

David is currently President of the Chinese Landlord Association (CLA), an organisation created to protect the interests of Chinese Landlords and Investors in the UK. The CLA has a membership of approximately 1,500.

David is the Managing Director of Affinity Sunny Way, which deals with overseas investment and fund management, and Chairman of Affinity Home Construction which deals with construction projects in the UK. He is also a regular columnist in a number of publications in the UK and Chinese media.

Fang Min Macdonald

Fang Min Macdonald

Fang Min began her career as a banker at UBS Head Office in Zurich, later moving to UBS Hong Kong where she was also responsible for the opening of UBS' representative office in Shanghai. During her career at UBS Fang Min led many important client conferences and events. In 1998 Fang Min moved to London with her new family and since that time has been involved in promoting projects in the creative industries, with a focus on fine art and music.

Fang Min is delighted to join the Chinese Welfare Trust as she believes the charity has a vital role to play in our society. She looks forward to doing more to help the elderly and disadvantaged in the Chinese community in the UK.

Cllr Xingang Wang JP

Cllr Xingang Wang JP

Xingang works in the accounting function in financial service in London. He is a local councillor, a former school governor, a magistrate and has been a volunteer in various charities for last 16 years. He was born and raised in China and came to UK since 2001. Xingang stood as a Parliamentary Candidate for the Conservative in Manchester Central in 2015 and 2017. He is the founder of Conservative Friends of the Chinese Surrey branch, Conservative local branch secretary since 2014 and he wrote the newspaper column of 'Chinese Conservative' in Chinese. He was elected as Claygate Parish Councillor in 2015 and now the vice chairman of Highway and Transportation Committee. He started his career in Engineering before moved to Finance. He studied in Imperial College, Oxford University and Harvard Business School. He published his first book to give career advice in finance in 2014 and currently the secretary of local school’s PTA.

Yan Hua Ou

Yan Hua Ou

Hua graduated with a first-class honours degree in BSc Computer Games Programming from London Metropolitan University. She also has a Masters in Finance and Investment from Nottingham University and a BA (Hons) in Accounting and Financial Studies from University of Central Lancashire.

Hua has been a partner of a game development company which produced titles that sold in the Apple App Store. She formulates marketing campaigns and promotional materials such as websites, posters and leaflets for health organisations, including pharmacies and GP surgeries managed by NHS England, and charities such as UNICEF UK On Campus.

With seven years’ experience working in the community at the Chinese National Healthy Living Centre (CNHLC), Hua has worked as a key project officer looking after national health projects such as the “Macmillan Chinese Cancer Awareness Project” and the “Chinese Smoking and Dementia Awareness Project” funded by the Department of Health and Public Health England respectively.

Dr Lisa Yeung-Donaldson

Lisa holds a doctorate degree in Sociology from the University of Sussex and was the recipient of Sir Run-Run Shaw Scholarship for two years during her studies.

She has previously worked for the Chinese Information and Advice Centre as well as for the Southwark Citizens Advice Bureau where she had helped to launch an outreach advice service.  

She has returned from a stint living abroad, where she volunteered as a campaigner for Amnesty International Schweiz based in Zurich Switzerland.

Joe Hung

Joe Hung started to work for the Chinese Welfare Trust as a support worker for the clients of Soho Housing Association and had extended his service to other Chinese elderly live in Camden and Westminster.

Joe Hung speaks Mandarin and Cantonese, has a long and distinguished career working for various Chinese community centres as an experienced community worker.
